Dr. Aminu Maida has said that he hopes to pursue an optimal user experience for Nigerian telecoms subscribers as part of his vision as the nation’s telecoms regulatory agency’s chief.

Maida, who was appointed Executive Vice Chairman (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) by President Bola Tinubu on October 11, 2023 to lead the independent national regulatory authority for the Nigerian telecoms industry, was confirmed by the Senate on November 15, 2023.

On his watch as Nigeria’s telecoms regulatory czar, Maida’s strategic vision at NCC as an agency under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMoCIDE), will align with the latter’s strategy blueprint, the NCC chief said.

Maida’s promise may be cheery news for Nigeria’s telecoms millions counting the users of 224,713,710 active phone lines and 163,838,439 internet subscriptions across the country.

The NCC Executive Vice Chairman while unveiling his vision of the industry regulator’s plan to optimize subscribers’ telecoms experience, while aligning with the Strategic Blueprint of the Federal Ministry of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), said the plan is to ensure a thriving Nigerian digital economy.

In support of FMCIDE’s strategic effort, consisting of five key elements; Knowledge, Policy, Infrastructure, ICE (Innovation, Capital and Entrepreneurship) and Trade, the NCC’s strategy thrust will also focus on area(s) of: Licensees and Industry, Consumers and Government.

These areas of focus are expected to improve industry resilience, enhance delivery of regulatory services, enable cross-industry innovation, improve quality of experience, grow telecoms industry, enable backbone to support the government’s digital public infrastructure drive and bridge the rural-urban digital divide, the NCC chief’s vision outlined.

The Commission, the telecoms regulator said, seeks collaboration of all key and relevant stakeholders to drive optimal quality of experience for consumers across all touch points, as well as expansion of infrastructure while fostering innovation and sustainable growth of the telecoms sector.

The strategic focus is to be driven by the recognition that each of its stakeholders maintains a unique perspective and has different expectations of the Commission, according to NCC. The Commission, the telecoms regulator said, seeks collaboration of all key and relevant stakeholders to drive optimal quality of experience for consumers across all touch points, as well as expansion of infrastructure while fostering innovation and sustainable growth of the telecoms sector.

The key factors, according to NCC, driving the leadership to accomplish these strategic goals includes the following:

People: Our biggest asset is our people. We will invest in our skills and capabilities as we take a leading role in driving the desired changes in the telecoms industry.
