The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled an e-service platform for type approval applications to improve the clearance process for equipment used across the telecoms industry.

The telecoms regulator says that the type-approval e-service platform, which went live in October, is part of the upgrade of the mandatory NCC clearance that must be obtained before handsets, devices and other equipment can be used or deployed across the Nigerian telecoms industry.

NCC says that type approval requirements for electronic devices are aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.

The guidelines, NCC says, were developed to ensure that telecoms equipment used in Nigeria meets regulatory and quality standards, and cover a wide range of products, including wireless devices, routers, and modems.

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

According to NCC’s type approval guidelines reviewed by Technology Times, the regulator outlines the key requirements for companies seeking to obtain type approval for their products.

The guidelines, NCC says, were developed to ensure that telecoms equipment used in Nigeria meets regulatory and quality standards, and cover a wide range of products, including wireless devices, routers, and modems.

Inside NCC Type Approval Guidelines

The first requirement for companies seeking type approval in Nigeria is to submit an application to the NCC, along with the necessary documents and fees. The application must include a detailed description of the product, including its technical specifications, intended use, and any relevant certifications or approvals from other regulatory bodies.

Once the application has been received, the NCC will conduct a technical evaluation of the product to ensure that it complies with Nigeria’s regulatory and quality standards. This evaluation may include testing the product in a laboratory to verify its performance, as well as reviewing its technical documentation to ensure that it meets the necessary standards.

In addition to technical compliance, companies seeking type approval in Nigeria must also demonstrate that their products are safe and do not pose a risk to public health or the environment. This may require them to provide additional documentation, such as certificates of compliance with relevant safety and environmental regulations.

Another key requirement for companies seeking type approval in Nigeria is to comply with the country’s labelling and marking requirements. This includes ensuring that products are properly labelled with their model and serial numbers, as well as any other relevant information such as the manufacturer’s name and address.

Companies seeking type approval in Nigeria must also comply with the country’s customs regulations, which require all imported goods to be properly documented and cleared by customs before they can be sold or used in the country. This may involve obtaining an import licence or providing additional documentation to customs officials.

The guidelines also require companies to maintain accurate records of their products and to notify the NCC of any changes or updates to their products, including changes to their technical specifications, intended use, or any relevant certifications or approvals.

In addition to these requirements, the guidelines outline a number of other considerations for companies seeking type approval in Nigeria. These include the need to ensure that products do not interfere with other wireless devices or networks, and that they are compatible with Nigeria’s telecoms infrastructure.

NCC says that apart from ensuring that telecoms equipment used in Nigeria meet high regulatory and quality standards, companies seeking to sell their products in the country must comply with all necessary regulations and requirements, to ensure that their products are safe, reliable, and meet the needs of Nigerian consumers and businesses.
