Nigeria has generated over ₦1.4 billion in revenue from data protection initiatives, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has told attendees at the R.I.S.K Dubai 2024 Conference in the United Arab Emirates.

According to the nation’s data protection chief, “NDPC has so far generated over ₦1.4 billion in revenue, received 4,701 audit reports and registered 32,888 Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance, considering compliance rate is at only 6%.”

Nigeria, Olatunji says, has made significant progress in data protection, particularly with the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act), 2023, which he highlighted during his keynote address titled “Implementing a Data Protection Law: The Nigerian Experience.”

According to the nation’s data protection chief, “NDPC has so far generated over ₦1.4 billion in revenue, received 4,701 audit reports and registered 32,888 Data Controllers and Processors of Major Importance, considering compliance rate is at only 6%.”

He explains the importance of international collaboration, citing recent Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner in Canada, Huawei Technologies in China, and other major Nigerian Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

Olatunji noted that the Commission has adopted a Public-Private Partnership model in Nigeria, which has been replicated by other Data Protection Authorities globally. “Through this model, the Commission has licensed 234 Data Protection Compliance Organisations DPCOs), trained over 1,500 Data Protection Officers (DPOs) across various sectors and established the National Certification Body to certify DPOs”, he highlighted.
