NigComSat: New boss eyes broadcasting and broadband market stakes

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat) wants to expand into the niche markets for direct-to-home broadcasting and broadband services across the country, Engineer Tukur Funtua, new Managing Director and CEO of the satellite company has hinted. The new NigComSat chief, who is a former Engineer at BUA Cement Plc, was appointed last month by President Muhammadu Buhari to head Nigeria’s space service provider company following the retirement of his predecessor, Dr. Abimbola Alale. NigComSat hopes to move from being a fringe player in the delivery of DTH and broadband services into a major national player by extending its services across Nigeria, on the watch of the satellite company’s new CEO. New NigComSat MD: We want to acquire customers nationwide “With more than 50 DTH platforms,” NigComSat says on its website, “broadcasters trust us to deliver a wide range of media content to their customers’ homes – including standard TV, HDTV and the Ultra HD channels. Our platform provides free-to-air, free-to-view and pay-TV channels, as well as video-on-demand content.” Engineer Funtua has challenged the team at the Satellite Broadband & Broadcasting Company (SBBC), a NIGCOMSAT subsidiary formed to provide satellite downstream services such as broadband internet and broadcasting (DTH) services, to explore nationwide customer acquisition across Nigeria. “While commending the team for their efforts so far, the MD, Engr Tukur Mohammed Lawal, during his visit to the DTH facility managed by the Satellite Broadband & Broadcasting Company (SBBC), a subsidiary of @NigComSat1R , challenged them to explore prospective customers nationwide,” the satellite company said in a statement on Twitter following the CEO’s visit to the team. Nigeria’s broadcasting industry and digital economy will grow by N450,000,000,000 per annum through increases in advertising, Nollywood income and value added services, and will unlock opportunities for jobs in the broadcast industry and other ancillary industries, according to the the nation’s broadcasting regulator, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). According to NBC, the complementary movie industry will have a safe and profitable distribution channel direct to 20m+ homes through STB (set to boxes) that will receive TV signals and generate N112,500,000,000 extra income for Nigeria’s Nollywood ecosystem. Engineer Tukur, who said that his appointment as the new MD of NigComSat “is a trust from God” has said that the staff members should “get ready for a long and hectic journey ahead.” The satellite provider says its NIGCOMSAT1r satellite in orbit “provides ubiquitous high speed coverage over areas that terrestrial network operators cannot reach. Even in the most remote parts of Nigeria or West Africa, an edge that enable it to “always deliver affordable consistent, reliable, and fast broadband services.” Among other services, NigComSat says its mobile b ackhaul solutions integrate easily with existing network management systems and can help overcome common network challenges faced by most mobile network operators (MNOs). Throught its network, MNOs can cost-effectively extend their network reach especially in rural and remote areas and reduce congestion “by providing flexible backhaul capacity to meet demand peaks in network traffic through unique bandwidth-saving technology.
