The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has announced the launch of a youth empowerment programme for young Nigerians.
This initiative, set to take place in Dutse, Jigawa, from April 7 to 11, includes a Space-Tech Hackathon and Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) training, according to the government-owned satellite company.
The programme targets university students, start-ups, and local innovators from seven states: Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa.

NIGCOMSAT, established in 2006, is Nigeria’s primary satellite communications company. It plays a crucial role in providing satellite-based communication services, including broadband internet access, across the country.
The programme, NIGCOMSAT says, is designed to engage young Nigerians, equipping them with innovative technological skills and enhancing broadband connectivity in remote areas.
Aisha Bantam, Head of Corporate Affairs at NIGCOMSAT, says in a statement seen by Technology Times that the initiative aims to empower young Nigerians, particularly university students, innovators, and professionals from the North-West region.

The Space-Tech Hackathon will provide participants with mentorship and hands-on experience in satellite technologies. This event allows participants to identify challenges, create ideas, build prototypes, and receive mentorship using satellite technologies. The winning team will be enrolled in the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025 for further development and implementation of their projects.
In addition to the hackathon, 100 youths will receive training on installing VSAT systems. This certification provides participants with technical skills, enhancing job prospects and enabling them to explore careers or entrepreneurial opportunities in the ICT sector.
Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, NIGCOMSAT Managing Director, adds that the programme aims to drive innovation, address community challenges, and reduce youth unemployment across Nigeria. “The aim of Space-Tech Hackathons and VSAT Trainings is to inspire innovation, solve community challenges, and tackle youth unemployment nationwide,” she states.
NIGCOMSAT recently conducted a similar youth empowerment program in the North-East region through a regional Space-Tech Hackathon held in Yola, Adamawa State. Co-hosted by the Adamawa State Government, this event focused on fostering innovation in satellite technology while driving economic and social impact.
