The Niger State has rolled out cashless payment systems for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses introduced to boost transportation across the state.

The Niger State Ministry of Communications Technology and Digital Economy, which rolled out the cashless payment system for the newly-introduced CNG buses, said that it is facilitated by CowryCards.

Touch and Pay, the company behind the Cowry Card, has teamed up with the ministry to introduce automated bus cards for the convenience of commuters.

Touch and Pay, the company behind the Cowry Card, Niger State said, has teamed up with the ministry to introduce automated bus cards for the convenience of commuters.

“We’ve partnered with Touch and Pay, the creators of the renowned Cowry Card, to introduce automated bus cards similar to the Oyster Card in the UK. This will ensure smoother transactions and greater convenience for all commuters,” the Niger State Ministry of Communications Technology & Digital Economy announced.

Recently, the Niger State Government acquired a fleet of new buses with 200 CNG licence plates, which will be used for public transportation to enhance the state’s transport system.

This decision to procure CNG buses, according to the state government, was made to promote sustainable energy and ease the financial burden on citizens following the removal of subsidies.

Furthermore, the state government has encouraged commuters to use the CNG buses, guaranteeing them that the buses are entirely cashless and offer complimentary Wi-Fi onboard.

“Effective immediately,” Niger State Government announced, “all newly procured CNG buses in Niger State will be 100% cashless! No need to search for change anymore; simply Tap and Go! Additionally, enjoy free onboard Wi-Fi during your journey for a seamless travel experience.”

The Niger State Ministry of Communications Technology & Digital Economy revealed on their LinkedIn social media handle that the Ministries of Communications Technology and Transport, the Niger State Internal Revenue Service, and the Niger State Transport Authority (NSTA) will collaborate to lead a new system.

The state government has declared that by the beginning of Q3 2024, all NSTA buses will embrace cashless payment methods. This marks a significant milestone in the efforts to establish a more efficient, modern, and accessible transportation system for the residents of Niger State, according to the government.

According to reports, the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, had in 2023 by signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with four companies to procure 200 environmentally friendly CNG buses for N7 billion.

The Niger State Government said it is committed to working towards a digital future by enhancing and innovating public services. With the deployment of new buses, the state anticipates improvements in public transport, accessibility, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
