Nigeria’s decision to implement an e-visa system is a technology option adopted to simplify visa processing that will boost the nation’s tourism and economic growth, according to Lola Ade-John, Minister of Tourism.
The newly implemented e-visa system simplifies visa processing through online applications and biometric tracking, according to the government.
The Tourism Minister, said this during a meeting with Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, where they unveiled key reforms to enhance Nigeria’s tourism and immigration services.
Nigeria’s new e-visa system features biometric tracking
The meeting focused on “boosting Nigeria’s tourism industry and optimising processes for international visitors,” emphasising the newly implemented visa reforms.
During the meeting, the two government leaders discussed the importance of technology in improving visa processing, noting that the newly implemented e-visa system “allows online applications and includes biometric tracking to enhance security and reduce border wait times.”
The technology ensures a quicker, more cost-effective, and efficient application process, reducing the need for embassy visits.
Additionally, the e-visa system is expected to create new opportunities for professionals and investors, positioning Nigeria as a leading destination for travellers.
The post-meeting statement report highlighted that “these innovations position Nigeria as a leading destination for tourism and a key hub for business and investment.”
The visa reforms also introduced a five-year visa for highly skilled professionals and a visa-on-arrival programme for African Union passport holders.
Both initiatives are expected “to attract top talent from various sectors, including technology and medicine, contributing to economic growth.”
Furthermore, the new reform has expanded visa categories from six to 79, which means that individuals now have different visa types to choose from including work, tourism, business, diplomatic, and technology-related visas, all of which can be processed online.
On the other hand, the visa-on-arrival programme simplifies travel by allowing visitors to obtain visas upon arrival, reducing processing times and enhancing their travel experience. These changes position Nigeria in line with global travel standards, showing the country’s commitment to modernisation.
“This initiative supports President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, aiming to enhance tourism while facilitating the entry of professionals and investors,” according to the government agencies.
Through this collaboration, the tourism and immigration sectors aim to boost Nigeria’s global competitiveness, making it easier to “access the country’s cultural and natural attractions” while encouraging technological growth and investment.”
