Nigeria’s Internet domain name has recorded growing uptake by the Internet community with over 18,000 names transactions on the nation’s prime online property last year.
According to 2014 year-end information obtained by Technology Times from the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA), the month of March last year witnessed a peak in Internet domain name transactions when a total of 3,517 .ng addresses were traded with 2,317 fresh registrations; 1,055 renewals and 145 transfers.[su_box title=”Prime online property” style=”glass”]According to the name transaction breakdown, as at the end of last year, there were 18,870 domain names registered by the Internet community, underscoring the gradually growing profile of the Nigerian online property as a destination of choice for the Internet community. Just like its counterparts in other parts of the world responsible for country Internet name management, NiRA, which is the local registry for .ng Internet domain names, also maintains the database of names registered in Nigeria for the .ng country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD).
According to the name transaction breakdown, as at the end of last year, there were 18,870 domain names registered by the Internet community, underscoring the gradually growing profile of the Nigerian online property as a destination of choice for the Internet community.
“The month of December 2014 recorded a drop in the .ng domain name purchase activities by the Registrants. (One can guess that domain names are not popular gift items!). There was also a slight decrease in the number of domain names renewed in the same month mainly due to the Christmas and New Year festivals and celebrations”, NIRA says on its website in a review of the year.
According to the domain name manager, “there was a remarkable increase in the transfer window” which was traced to the entrance of new registrars.
Overall, 1,503 domain names were registered, with renewal of 820 domain names and transfer of only 106 domain names.
The total activities of .ng domain names in December 2014, was less than in the month of November 2014, NIRA says.
According to the body, the number of NiRA Accredited Registrars remained at 47 “with some applications for Registrar registration undergoing processing.”
