The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has partnered with weather intelligence company Tomorrow.io to create a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) system for farmers in the country.
The DCAS system will provide location-specific weather alerts directly to farmers’ mobile phones via SMS for them to make informed decisions that protect their crops and livelihoods.
The Nigerian agriculture sector faces numerous challenges, including unpredictable weather patterns exacerbated by climate change. Access to timely and accurate weather information is critical for farmers to plan their activities effectively and mitigate risks associated with adverse weather conditions.

Farmers will receive real-time weather updates and alerts based on their geographical location, enabling them to respond promptly to changing conditions. The use of SMS for delivering alerts ensures that even those without internet access can benefit from this service, making it inclusive for all farmers.
DCAS to deliver ‘actionable weather advisories’ to smallholder farmers
Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability & Shared Values at MTN Nigeria, says the new DCAS system is designed to address these challenges by delivering actionable weather advisories tailored to specific locations. This service will be particularly beneficial for smallholder farmers who often lack access to advanced weather forecasting tools.
Adisa says the DCAS system will leverage MTN’s extensive mobile network and data capabilities, combined with Tomorrow.io’s advanced weather intelligence technology.

- The advisories will provide practical recommendations on farming practices based on current weather forecasts, helping farmers optimise their operations. By receiving timely information, farmers can make better decisions regarding planting, harvesting, and protecting their crops from extreme weather events.
During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Professor Charles Anosike, Director General of NIMET, underscores the alignment of this project with global goals for early warning systems as outlined by the United Nations.
He is optimistic that the collaboration could open up opportunities for private sector involvement in climate science.
MTN Nigeria’s commitment to driving climate action was echoed by its representatives at the event. They highlighted how the partnership aligns with their broader strategy to support sustainable development through innovative solutions that address pressing societal issues.
Tomorrow.io’s platform uses machine learning algorithms and real-time data analysis to provide accurate weather forecasts tailored specifically for agricultural needs. This technology enables farmers to receive alerts about potential weather disruptions such as heavy rainfall or drought conditions well in advance. By incorporating such sophisticated tools into everyday farming practices, Nigeria aims to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience against climate shocks.
