Nigeria’s data protection and telecoms regulator has established a joint working group to strengthen data privacy and protection in the nation’s telecoms industry.
Nigeria, home to a growing connected population, accounted for 164,926,599 active phone lines; 139,282,108 basic internet connections and 96,321,215 broadband connections by 2024, according to official figures by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) announced that it has joined forces with the NCC to form a joint working group to strengthen data protection and privacy in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

NDPC-NCC synergy to boost data protection in Nigerian telecoms sector
The group, Data Protection in Telecommunications Working Group (DPTWG), was officially launched by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of NDPC.
During the launch, Dr. Olatunji spoke on the need to safeguard the rights of Nigeria’s over 164 million mobile phone users, ensuring their data privacy and protection.
For the nation’s data protection chief, “ the synergy between NDPC and NCC would significantly contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy and national development.”

During the launch, Dr. Olatunji spoke on the need to safeguard the rights of Nigeria’s over 164 million mobile phone users, ensuring their data privacy and protection.
The new group, NDPC says, will be responsible for the development of innovative solutions, facilitating capacity building for stakeholders, and ensuring the implementation of best practices in data privacy within the telecom industry.
Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner (Technical Services) at NCC, speaking on behalf of Dr. Aminu Maida, the NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman, reaffirms the telecoms regulator’s commitment to ensuring compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (2023) within the telecommunications sector.
“The NCC is fully prepared to support the working group in its mandate to deepen data protection and privacy” the telecoms regulatory chief says.
The initiative is in line with Nigeria’s digital transformation goals, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding data privacy rights in a fast paced digital world, according to NDPC.
