The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, in collaboration with SAMU Technology and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), has launched the Circular Economy Youth Empowerment Initiative (CEYEI), a nationwide programme designed to tackle unemployment and boost sustainable economic growth through green technologies.

Speaking at the launch in Abuja, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development, described the initiative as a “landmark achievement” under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The programme, the Youth Development Minister says, seeks not only to create jobs but also to nurture a generation of innovators capable of turning Nigeria’s environmental challenges into opportunities.

“At the heart of the initiative is the flagship Waste to Wealth Project, which will transform waste into valuable eco-friendly products while creating sustainable green jobs for Nigerian youth,” Olawande adds. “Through this programme, young people will gain practical skills, mentorship, and access to green technologies, as well as opportunities to showcase their innovations in both local and international markets.”

A dedicated Waste to Wealth online platform has also been unveiled to serve as a hub for registration, networking, investment access, and market expansion. The Minister says the platform will enable participants to convert sustainable ideas into viable businesses.

“CEYEI will be implemented nationwide, covering all 36 states and 774 local government areas, with inclusivity at its core, ensuring equal access to opportunities for young people across regions and backgrounds,” Olawande adds.

Also speaking at the launch, Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, underscores the broader societal impact of the initiative. He notes that Nigeria faces a humanitarian crisis affecting over three million people, with a global funding gap of $36 billion. He calls on stakeholders to support youth-led green projects that can generate jobs, reduce poverty, and strengthen resilience.

Olubunmi Olusanya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, adds that CEYEI will harness the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of young Nigerians to turn discarded materials into sustainable livelihoods.

Representing the President of RAN, Blessing Ekwere commends the partnership, saying: “CEYEI demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to making young people not just beneficiaries of development, but drivers of change. By reducing waste, reusing resources, and recycling materials, this initiative empowers young Nigerians to take the lead in climate action while building a thriving circular economy.”

Alongside CEYEI, the Ministry is also introducing complementary programmes including the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA), digital literacy initiatives with NITDA, the YO! Health mental wellness hub, and the Youth Cred Scheme, which will provide loans and incubator support to youth entrepreneurs. Collectively, the initiatives are expected to lay the foundation for a national innovation ecosystem powered by green technology.
