Moses Michael, a Nigerian lawn tennis player recently made history on the court at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club when he beat Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe, to emerge winner of the Etisalat Governor’s Cup 2014.
The Nigerian beat his opponent two sets to one, in the Men’s Singles finals, to emerge the first Nigerian player to win the title since the Etisalat-sponsored tournament started.
Babatunde Fashola, Governor of Lagos State, who declared the tournament closed, praised the players, sponsors and organizers for making this year’s edition a reality.
Zarah Razafinmahatratra from Madagascar defeated Sarah Adegoke, 6-0, 6-1 in the Women’s Singles finals.
Ndidi Okpaluba, Etisalat’s Director of PMO and Operational Strategy described the win as a proof of talents that abound in Nigeria especially in sports.
“We have been treated to a week of thrilling tennis served up by some very talented players and we, at Etisalat, believe there are more opportunities to groom upcoming talents. We are commitment to partnering with initiatives like the Governor’s Cup Tennis tournament in identifying and nurturing future talents. We believe that this partnership will help more tennis talents evolve from Nigeria,” she said.
