X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter and owned by Elon Musk, has announced a 51% increase in its Premium+ subscription fee in Nigeria, raising the cost from ₦22,550 to ₦34,000.

According to X, its Premium+ plan in Nigeria, which removes ads, now costs ₦34,000 per month, representing a 51% increase. The standard Premium plan remains ₦3,650 per month or ₦38,500 annually. Globally, Premium+ fees increased by 37.5% in the U.S. (from $16 to $22), by €5 in the EU (from €16 to €21), and by 45% in Canada (from $20 to $29).

“If you’re an existing subscriber and your next billing cycle starts before January 20, 2025, you’ll be charged at your current rate; otherwise, the new rate will begin with your first billing cycle after that date.” according to an update by X,

“Prices may vary by location, applicable taxes, and your payment method’s fees. For any questions, please message X Premium,”.

X says that the new pricing took effect on December 21, 2024, for new subscribers. Existing subscribers are expected to see the changes reflected in upcoming billing cycles.

Boost for Nigerian Content Creators

X’s Premium subscription plan is a crucial tool for Nigerian influencers benefiting from the platform’s creator programme. Earlier this year, the company reported distributing over $45 million to 150,000 content creators globally in just seven months.

While some creators have voiced concerns about relatively small payouts compared to other platforms, X claims its programme offers faster bi-weekly payments and easier eligibility requirements.

“Your Premium+ subscription fee contributes to this new, more equitable system where creator earnings are tied to the overall value they bring to X, not impressions of ads,” X explains.
