The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has reported a steady rise in the adoption of Nigeria’s .ng internet domain with the total of domain registrations reaching 231,853 in November 2024.

November 2024 .ng Domain Numbers
According to NiRA, the domain activity for November 2024 was marked by:
– 8,561 new domain registrations, despite a decline from 9,286 in November 2023.
– 5,726 renewals, up significantly from 5,017 in November 2023
– 176 restorations, compared to 113 in November 2023, marking an increase in recovering expired domains.

The upward trajectory of .ng domains has been consistent throughout 2024. In November 2024, the total number of domains stood at 231,853, compared to 211,164 in November 2023.
These metrics highlight the steady growth of Nigeria’s domain name industry, fueled by increasing awareness and efforts to promote local online identities, according to NiRA.

Similarly, September 2024 recorded 230,232 domains, up from 203,904 in September 2023. These figures indicate steady adoption and growth in Nigeria’s local domain ecosystem, driven by NiRA’s ongoing efforts to make .ng domains more accessible.
At NiRA’s 16th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in April 2024, Adesola Akinsanya, NiRA President, attributed the growth of .ng domains to a strategic focus on “people, processes, performance, and accountability.” Under his leadership, NiRA reported 94,723 new domain registrations and 61,227 renewals in 2023, amounting to a total of 155,950 domains.
Financially, NiRA recorded ₦ 348 million in revenue in 2023, with a surplus of ₦33.6 million, which the organisation says it reinvested into key initiatives, including public awareness campaigns and infrastructure improvements.
In 2022, the association introduced a 40% price reduction for .ng domain registrations to make it more affordable for businesses and individuals to adopt a local online identity.
Additionally, NiRA’s campaigns highlight the unique benefits of .ng domains, including:
- Improved visibility in local search results.
- Trust and credibility among Nigerian customers.
These efforts align with the government’s digital transformation goals, which aim to boost Nigeria’s online economy.
The .ng domain is now among the leading country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) in Africa, ranking second only to South Africa’s .za domain.
This positions Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s digital infrastructure, reflecting its growing tech ecosystem and increased broadband penetration, which currently stands at 42.24% according to data from the Nigerians Communications Commission (NCC).
Despite the progress, global domains like .com remain a major competitor, as many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria are unaware of the advantages of local domains. However, NiRA says its initiatives are closing this gap through awareness campaigns and simplified registration processes.
