About NiRA
NiRA, established in 2005, is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation responsible for managing Nigeria’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), the “.ng” domain extension.
NiRA’s key functions:
- Manages the .ng domain: NiRA acts as the administrator for all “.ng” domain names and the 11 sub-domain zones that fall under it.
- Ensures domain stability and security: NiRA works to maintain the smooth operation, security, and reliability of the over 198,000 “.ng” domains.
- Sets the rules: NiRA establishes policies for how “.ng” domains are created, allocated, and registered. This includes accrediting registrars (the companies that sell “.ng” domains to the public) and ensuring fair access for all. There are currently 100 registrars with NiRA. NiRA also maintains a database of all “.ng” registrations and works with national and international organisations on domain name system (DNS) issues.
