The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) says that Nigerians must understand the deceptive tactics used in a form of phishing called smishing.

NITDA says smishing, a term derived from “SMS phishing,” involves attackers sending fraudulent text messages to deceive individuals into divulging sensitive information or downloading malicious software.
Understanding smishing and effects
“These fraudulent texts often appear to be from trusted sources like banks, delivery services, or even government agencies. Smishing can result in serious consequences such as identity theft, financial fraud, or data breaches,” according to NITDA.
NITDA’s recommendations for public safety
NITDA urges individuals to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited messages. The agency recommends the following steps if you encounter a smishing message:
Block the number: Immediately block the number from which the message was sent.
Report the incident: Report the smishing attempt to relevant authorities to help combat this fraudulent activity.
Avoid clicking links: Do not click on any links or provide personal information in response to the message.
Verify the sender: Contact the supposed sender directly using official contact information to confirm the message’s authenticity.
