The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has said that the Public-Private Partnership model adopted by Nigeria is driving the implementation of strong data protection measures in the country.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, NDPC CEO and National Commissioner, who made this observation at the ID4Africa Annual General Conference underscored the critical role of Nigeria’s Public-Private Partnership model in implementing strong data protection measures and fostering a secure digital identity framework.
Speaking as a panelist on the “Safeguarding Individual Rights” session, Olatunji highlighted how the collaborative approach has been instrumental in building trust and confidence in Nigeria’s digital initiatives, which are crucial for the nation’s economic growth and international cooperation.

The NDPC CEO who provided attendees at the event with a comprehensive overview of the history of data protection in Nigeria, said that the partnership between public and private sectors has enabled the Federal data protection agency in the effective implementation of data protection laws and policies.
This model, Olatunji said, not only enhances compliance with regulations but also ensures the digital identity ecosystem is robust and reliable, attracting development partners and boosting Nigeria’s standing in the global digital economy.
During his presentation, Olatunji articulated the foundational role of digital identity in the digital economy, describing it as the backbone of digitalization efforts that enable secure and efficient interactions in the digital space.
He highlighted the NDPC’s commitment to creating a reliable digital identity framework through stringent data protection laws and policies.
Emphasizing that effective digital identity systems must be built on a foundation of trust, he noted the importance of safeguarding personal data and ensuring transparency and accountability in digital identity processes.
Nigeria’s adherence to these principles has been pivotal in gaining the confidence of both its citizens and international partners, Olatunji said while calling for continued cooperation and strict adherence to data protection standards as such efforts are indispensable for fostering a trustworthy and globally-competitive digital economy.
