Meanwhile, Nigeria’s last population census took place in 2006, placing the country’s population at 140 million. With nearly two decades since the last count, there is a pressing need for updated data to support effective national planning and policymaking.
The National Assembly has thrown its weight behind the proposed 2025 census, with Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, underscoring its importance for development planning. The exercise is expected to leverage advanced technology to improve accuracy and transparency.
However, NPC faces funding challenges, as its current budget falls short of what is needed for a full-scale biometric census. To bridge the gap, alternative financing options are being explored.
The NPC reiterated its commitment to transparency in the buildup to Nigeria’s first biometric Population and Housing Census.
It is asking Nigerians to rely on official sources for accurate information, and to support the Commission’s efforts in ensuring a credible and successful census exercise.
