Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), has called on the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), the insurance industry regulator, to prioritise identity protection in its technology deployments.
Dr. Olatunji made this appeal during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Insurance/CEO of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Omosehin, and his team.
During the visit, Dr. Olatunji provided an overview of the development of data protection in Nigeria, underlining its significance. He detailed the severe consequences of failing to protect personally identifiable information, which can include financial losses, loss of body parts, and even death in extreme cases.

“Protecting identity is crucial when deploying technology,” Dr. Olatunji emphasised. He noted that the law applies to Nigerian data subjects both domestically and internationally. To support this, he offered free training for NAICOM staff to enhance their understanding and implementation of data protection and privacy within the insurance sector.
NDPC boss also discussed NAICOM’s compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, highlighting its role as both a regulator and a major data controller. He praised NAICOM’s adherence to the law, noting that it sets a strong example for the insurance sector.
Omosehin expressed gratitude for the insights shared by Dr. Olatunji and recognised the importance of NAICOM’s compliance in leading the insurance sector. He accepted the offer of free training and conveyed his appreciation for the initiative.
