The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) says it has adopted technology to prevent corruption and encourage transparency in the oil and gas sector.

Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of NUPRC, says that the Oil and Gas Industry Service Permit (OGISP) Portal has gone live as a key tool in ensuring transparency.

Komolafe, represented by the Executive Commissioner for Development and Production, Mr Enorense Amadasu, disclosed this at a recent anti-corruption sensitisation programme organised by NUPRC in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The portal, according to the NUPRC chief, automates permit processing, “significantly reducing human interaction, a common avenue for bribery and other corrupt practices.”

According to Komolafe, “automated processes like the Oil and Gas Industry Service Permit (OGISP) Portal which reduces human interaction in permit processes and consequently the incidents of bribery.”

The commission’s chief also says that it has taken other measures to reduce corruption like its open and competitive bidding processes for awarding licenses and leases, the recently launched HostComply platform, designed to improve the administration of the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) and a whistle blowing channel for complaints.

These initiatives, Komolafe adds, are part of NUPRC’s strategy to ensure that the oil and gas sector operates with the highest standards of integrity.
