Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has pledged to fulfill the request of Abdulazeez Abdulrahmon, the winner of the 20th edition of the Spelling Bee Competition and One-Day Governor of Lagos State, for the construction of an ICT Laboratory at Oriwu Senior Model College.

Abdulrahmon, a student from Oriwu Senior Model College in Ikorodu, was received by Governor Sanwo-Olu, Dr. (Mrs.) Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and other top government officials during a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina.
Accompanied by his team members, including the One-Day Deputy Governor and the One-Day Secretary to the State Government, Abdulrahmon presented his request to Sanwo-Olu, who assured him that the ICT Laboratory project would be implemented. The Governor instructed Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, to initiate the necessary steps for the project.
Sanwo-Olu also took the opportunity to congratulate all the students for their outstanding achievements in the Spelling Bee Competition, emphasising the positive impact of the competition on participants’ confidence and vocabulary development.

Furthermore, Mr. Olabode Agoro, the Lagos State Head of Service, commended the government’s commitment to investing in education as a means of securing the future of Lagos State. He assured the students of potential opportunities within the public service, stating, “There is a reserved place for you within the Lagos State Public Service upon completing your education.”
During a reception at the Exco Chamber, Lagos House in Ikeja, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, also welcomed the One-Day Governor and his team on behalf of Governor Sanwo-Olu. Dr. Hamzat encouraged the students to follow in the footsteps of past winners who have excelled in various fields, emphasising their role as shining examples of the state’s dedication to nurturing future leaders.
He advised the young leaders to remain committed to positive change and to proudly represent Lagos State. “You should be proud of being products of Lagos State, and be determined to change any negative narratives about our country,” he stated.
The First Lady, Dr. Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, and Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, the wife of the Deputy Governor, also offered words of encouragement to the students, urging them to continue their pursuit of academic success. They assured the students that the government is dedicated to creating conducive learning environments across the state.
Dr. Sanwo-Olu introduced the students to various initiatives led by her office, including the War Against Drug Abuse, Fight Against Gender-Based Violence, Lagos Boy Child Initiative, and School Support Initiative.
Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, explained that the official tour undertaken by the One-Day Governor and his cabinet aimed to broaden the knowledge of the young leaders and provide valuable experiences for their future careers.
Mr. Remi Abdul, the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics at the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), commended the ongoing efforts to sustain the One-Day Governor initiative. He highlighted the keenly-contested nature of the competition, which saw Abdulrahmon emerge as the winner at both zonal and state levels, serving as a morale booster for students.
Abdulrahmon expressed gratitude for the warm reception and described the experience as enlightening and unforgettable. He noted that the experience gained across key government offices was an eye-opener that would be cherished by him and his team members. Abdulrahmon also thanked the State Executive Council for their support and encouragement.
The One-Day Governor initiative of the Spelling Bee Competition, which began around 2004 and has produced about 20 winners, was established to promote confidence, vocabulary development among participants, and encourage excellence in their studies. This initiative aims to advance the educational sector of the State and the country at large.
