OpenAI, the prominent artificial intelligence (AI) startup known for groundbreaking innovations, has unveiled a system that recreates human voices.

Following its releases of image and video generators, OpenAI said that its revolutionary system capable of recreating human voices, codenamed Voice Engine, allows businesses to test its capabilities.

By providing a 15-second recording, Voice Engine can replicate a person’s voice, enabling synthetic reading of text that closely resembles the individual’s speech patterns.

However, OpenAI is exercising caution in sharing this technology more widely due to potential risks. Similar to image and video generators, Voice Engine could facilitate the spread of disinformation on social media platforms. Moreover, it raises concerns about online impersonation and the potential compromise of voice authentication systems used for sensitive applications like online banking.

OpenAI treading with caution on voice technology

However, OpenAI is exercising caution in sharing this technology more widely due to potential risks. Similar to image and video generators, Voice Engine could facilitate the spread of disinformation on social media platforms. Moreover, it raises concerns about online impersonation and the potential compromise of voice authentication systems used for sensitive applications like online banking.

Jeff Harris, an OpenAI product manager, emphasised the importance of responsible implementation, when he said that “this is a sensitive thing, and it is important to get it right.”

To address potential misuse, OpenAI said it is exploring various strategies, including watermarking synthetic voices and implementing controls to restrict the use of the technology with the voices of public figures like politicians.

This cautious approach mirrors OpenAI’s previous actions with its video generator, Sora, which was showcased but not publicly released. OpenAI joins a growing list of companies, including tech giants like Google and startups like ElevenLabs, that have developed AI technology capable of generating synthetic voices.

These advancements have diverse applications, from creating audiobooks to powering chatbots and automated radio stations. OpenAI said it has been using its voice generation technology to enhance ChatGPT, allowing for spoken interactions, and has offered businesses access to a variety of synthesized voices, all constructed from voice actor clips.

As AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, OpenAI hopes to remain at the forefront, balancing innovation with responsible stewardship to ensure the ethical and secure deployment of its groundbreaking advancements, the company said.
