OpenAI has unveiled its first custom artificial intelligence accelerator, dubbed Jalapeño, a move that could eventually make AI services such as ChatGPT faster, cheaper and more widely accessible to millions of users in Nigeria and around the world.
Developed in partnership with Broadcom and systems manufacturer Celestica, Jalapeño marks OpenAI’s entry into semiconductor development as the company seeks greater control over the computing infrastructure powering its rapidly growing AI ecosystem.
The custom chip is designed specifically for large language model (LLM) inference, the process through which AI systems such as ChatGPT generate responses to user prompts.
For Nigerian users, the significance of the development lies in its potential to reduce the cost of delivering AI services while improving speed and reliability. As AI adoption expands across education, software development, research, media, customer service and business operations in Nigeria, more efficient AI infrastructure could make advanced tools increasingly affordable and accessible.

By developing chips tailored specifically for its AI models, OpenAI hopes to lower those infrastructure costs while increasing computing capacity to serve billions of requests more efficiently.
“The world is moving to a compute-powered economy,” Greg Brockman, President and Co-Founder of OpenAI, says. “Jalapeño is part of our long-term full-stack infrastructure strategy to make compute more abundant, resulting in AI which is faster, more reliable, more affordable for people and businesses, and can be used to solve more important problems.”
The chip represents a major expansion of OpenAI’s strategy to build its own AI infrastructure stack, spanning models, software systems, networking and now custom silicon.
According to the company, engineering samples are already running machine learning workloads in laboratories, including GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark.
OpenAI says Jalapeño was developed from design to manufacturing tape-out in just nine months, a timeline the company believes may rank among the fastest ever achieved for a high-performance artificial intelligence application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC).
Unlike general-purpose accelerators adapted for AI workloads, OpenAI says Jalapeño was designed from the ground up for modern LLM inference.
The company explains that the architecture was optimised around the computational patterns most critical to frontier AI models, including memory movement, networking, serving systems and inference kernels.
“Jalapeño was designed from the ground up for LLM inference using detailed insights from our close collaboration with OpenAI researchers,” Richard Ho, who leads OpenAI’s hardware programme, says.
“We optimized the architecture around the kernels, memory movement, networking, and serving patterns that matter most for frontier AI models. Based on early testing, Jalapeño will efficiently execute our most important workloads close to the hardware’s theoretical limits.”
According to OpenAI, early testing indicates that the processor delivers substantially improved performance-per-watt compared with current state-of-the-art systems, although detailed benchmarks are expected in a future technical report.
The architecture is also designed to reduce data movement while balancing compute, memory and networking resources to improve overall system utilisation.
For users, these improvements could translate into faster ChatGPT response times, more capable AI assistants and reduced service disruptions during periods of high demand.
The launch comes as major AI companies increasingly pursue custom silicon to reduce dependence on Nvidia, whose graphics processing units (GPUs) currently dominate AI training and inference infrastructure.
Industry rivals including Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta have all invested heavily in proprietary AI chips as competition intensifies to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of operating increasingly sophisticated AI models.
Another notable aspect of the project is the use of OpenAI’s own AI models during the chip development process.
The company says AI systems were used to accelerate portions of the design and optimisation workflow, contributing to the unusually rapid development cycle.
“The same models served to users are helping improve the infrastructure used to run future models,” OpenAI says. “If AI can help engineers design better chips faster, it can lower the cost of compute across the industry and help democratize access to advanced AI.”
OpenAI describes Jalapeño as the first processor in a multi-generation computing platform that will combine OpenAI-designed accelerators with Broadcom’s networking and silicon technologies and Celestica’s rack and system integration expertise.
“Our collaboration with OpenAI represents a fundamental commitment to scaling the physical infrastructure required for the next decade of AI,” Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom, says.
“This is just the beginning of a multi-generation roadmap. By co-developing our industry-leading silicon directly with OpenAI, we are enabling the deployment of gigawatt-scale data centres with Microsoft and other partners beginning in 2026.”
The company says initial deployment is expected by the end of 2026, with expansion planned over subsequent generations of hardware.
