Opera 38 updates with new battery saver

Software Company, Opera says it has updated its stable Opera 38 for computers with a battery-saving mode to help prevent rapid draining of battery which, in turn, increases the laptop’s performance time.

The first release of the battery saver in its developer version generated a lot of positive feedback from users and also helped the company to gain many new users. Consequently, Opera has tested some completely new features and improved its browser, the company underscored in announcing the update.

Explaining how it was able to achieve the power saving technique, Opera highlighted its under-the-hood optimization processes which brought about the new update. The under-the-hood optimization processes include:

Battery Life of a smartphone

-Reducing activity in background tabs

-Waking CPU less often due to optimal scheduling of JavaScript timer

-Automatically pausing unused plug-ins

-Reducing frame rate to 30 frames per second

-Tuning video-playback parameters and forcing usage of hardware accelerated video codecs

-Pausing animations of browser themes including ad blocker – when enabled, it saves even more battery time

To enable the new power saver mode, Opera says once the laptop’s power cable is unplugged, the battery icon will appear next to the search and address field in the browser. Users can then click the battery icon to activate the power saver mode and flip on the switch. The browser will also detect when the laptop’s battery is running low and will suggest enabling power saver mode.

Other new features in Opera 38 include:

-Ad blocker: This feature enables users to add their own block lists.

-Speed dial improvements: With the new, three little dots on hover in place of where the delete button used to be, Opera says the new button provides quick access to the features previously only available in the context menu, like opening in private tab, or removing a website from your Speed Dial.

-Use your own photo as theme: The “Create your theme” option in the theme manager, which was introduced a while back, is now more visible for users. To explore this feature, the user should simply go to the Customize Start page and click the ‘+’ button; then, use his/her own photos to create a theme.

-Extension button visible in the Speed Dial side panel: All extension users will have the extension manager always at hand, and the extension icon is visible on the side panel on the left side of the Speed Dial page.

-Change in version support for OS X: Starting from this version, the software company says it is updating its requirements on Mac, which now supports OS X 10.9 and higher.
