Opera Mini said it delivered over 3,780 terabytes (TB) free data to Nigerian users in 2023, which the popular mobile browser translated to an estimated ₦5 billion in cost savings.

Opera Mini’s innovative data-saving technology has been instrumental in extending the longevity of users’ data bundles, with some lasting up to ten times longer compared to traditional usage, according to the technology company.

For many Nigerians, where approximately 60% of the population lives below the poverty line, Opera Mini said its contribution represents a significant reduction in monthly expenses, allowing more resources to be allocated towards personal development and education.

Opera Mini ‘on mission to democratise internet access’

Jørgen Arnesen, EVP Mobile at Opera, emphasised the company’s mission to democratise internet access, stating that “Opera’s journey in Nigeria reflects our vision to break down barriers and make the web accessible to everyone.” The substantial savings achieved through Opera Mini symbolise empowerment for millions of Nigerians, enabling them to explore educational opportunities and enrich their lives through online resources.

While celebrating its global milestone of 1 billion downloads, Opera Mini’s impact in Nigeria is particularly noteworthy due to the country’s internet penetration rate of 55%, signifying a significant digital disparity. In response, Opera said it adopted an “Africa First” strategy, committing over $100 million to drive digital transformation initiatives throughout the continent.

Opera Mini’s success is attributed to its lightweight design and advanced data compression technology, which reduces data usage by up to 90%, according to the company. This efficiency means that even individuals with limited data plans can enjoy extended browsing sessions and access online content without constraints.

Moreover, Opera has collaborated with major telecom providers such as Airtel and MTN to offer free data campaigns, granting Opera Mini users up to 1.5GB of complimentary data each month. Over 35 million users have benefited from these initiatives, fostering greater digital inclusion and connectivity nationwide.

Beyond statistics, the technology company said, Opera Mini represents a gateway to opportunity for millions of Nigerians, offering features like secure downloads, offline access to web pages, and enhanced privacy controls. By empowering users with affordable and efficient internet access, Opera Mini said it is playing a transformative role in shaping Nigeria’s digital landscape and enhancing the lives of its citizens.
