POCO, the youth-focused smartphone brand under Xiaomi, has rolled out the POCO C85 in Nigeria, targeting young consumers with a mix of long battery life, large display, and sleek design at a retail price of about ₦195,645.
The launch strengthens Xiaomi’s footprint in Africa, where the technology company — which also owns POCO and Redmi — shipped 2.8 million smartphones in Q2 2025, securing a 14% market share and recording 32% year-on-year growth, according to market tracker Canalys. This positions Xiaomi behind Transsion Holdings — makers of Tecno, Infinix, and itel — and Samsung, which dominate Nigeria’s smartphone market.

POCO C85: Battery built for Nigeria’s power realities
For Nigerian consumers often challenged by erratic electricity supply, the C85’s 6,000mAh battery stands out as a key selling point. POCO says the phone delivers up to 22 hours of video playback, 82 hours of music, or over two days of mixed use. The device supports 33W fast charging, hitting 50% in about 31 minutes, while smart charging tech balances speed with long-term battery health. With 10W reverse charging, users can also turn the phone into a power bank for other devices.
Big screen and durable build
The POCO C85 sports a 6.9-inch HD+ display with up to 120Hz AdaptiveSync refresh rate, adjusting between 60Hz, 90Hz, and 120Hz depending on the task. Certified by TÜV Rheinland for low blue light, flicker-free, and circadian-friendly use, the display is designed to reduce eye strain — a plus for Nigerian users who spend long hours streaming, gaming, or browsing.
The display also integrates Wet Touch 2.0, ensuring responsiveness even with sweaty or damp hands — useful for Nigeria’s humid weather. With an IP64 rating for dust and splash resistance, the C85 combines its 7.99mm slim body with a curved back design for better grip. Colour options include Black, Purple, and Green, styled with an aurora-inspired finish.
Performance and AI integration
Under the hood, the C85 runs on a MediaTek Helio G81-Ultra processor, paired with up to 16GB RAM (via memory extension from 8GB) and 1TB expandable storage. It ships with Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2, which integrates Google’s Circle to Search and the Gemini AI assistant, alongside Xiaomi ecosystem features like call sync and shared clipboard.
Cameras and multimedia
The phone packs a 50MP AI dual-camera system with portrait mode and ultra HD capture, supported by an 8MP selfie camera. For audio, POCO includes 200% boosted speaker output and retains the 3.5mm headphone jack — a feature still in high demand among Nigerian consumers. The C85 also includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for quick unlocking.
Competitive pricing in Nigeria’s mid-range market
At about ₦195,645, the POCO C85 enters Nigeria’s crowded mid-range smartphone segment, competing directly with the Tecno Spark 20 Pro, Infinix Hot 40 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy A05s.
While Tecno and Infinix leverage affordability and deep market penetration, POCO is betting on battery endurance, fast charging, and Google AI integration to appeal to young Nigerian buyers seeking value-packed devices with a premium feel.
