Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold6, recently unveiled at Galaxy Unpacked 2024, introduces several advancements in foldable phone technology.

Here’s a detailed review of its key features.

Main Display and Vision Booster

The Galaxy Z Fold6 features a main display with a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, ensuring visibility even in bright sunlight. This high brightness level is complemented by Vision Booster technology, which optimises colour and contrast based on lighting conditions, aiming to improve the overall viewing experience.

Wing Plate and Hinge

The device introduces a refined wing plate designed to facilitate smoother folding and unfolding of the phone. This component, despite its thin profile, is made from a special material to ensure alignment and protection of the internal display. The hinge technology has also been upgraded. It is now slimmer yet maintains durability thanks to new reinforced materials. This advancement is aimed at providing a more portable and stable folding mechanism.

The front case of the Z Fold6 is made from Enhanced Armor Aluminum, offering both a thinner and lighter design while retaining durability. The case includes an IP48 rating for water resistance, which adds to its resilience. Additionally, the phone incorporates a vapor chamber roughly 1.6 times larger than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold5. This larger chamber helps in better heat dissipation, contributing to stable performance during intensive use.

Battery and Printed Board Assembly

To accommodate its slim profile, the Z Fold6 uses a thinner main battery divided into two parts. The sub battery, positioned on the opposite side, is also slimmed down. The internal components have been optimized with a shift from a multilayer main printed board assembly (PBA) to a single-layer design, while a slim printed circuit board is used for the sub PBA.

Back Cover and Sub Display

The back cover of the Z Fold6 is made from Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2, known for its durability. This cover not only protects the device but also complements its sleek design. The sub display has been widened and is now horizontally balanced to enhance usability, mirroring the brightness capabilities of the main display with a maximum of 2,600 nits.

Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold6 brings incremental improvements over its predecessors, focusing on enhancing display visibility, durability, and performance. While the advancements in hinge and wing plate technology contribute to a more refined folding experience, the larger vapour chamber and optimised battery design are aimed at maintaining device performance under varied conditions. The Z Fold6’s design and feature upgrades reflect Samsung’s ongoing efforts to refine foldable technology, although its success in meeting user needs will depend on practical usage and real-world durability. say
