Samsung Electronics has launched its latest 1-terabyte (TB) microSD cards, the PRO Plus and EVO Plus, designed by the technology company to offer unprecedented storage capacity for mobile and portable devices.

Samsung claims these new microSD cards can hold over 400,000 4K UHD images, meeting the growing needs of content creators and tech enthusiasts for high-performance, high-capacity storage solutions.

The PRO Plus and EVO Plus microSD cards push the boundaries of portable storage by offering 1TB of space, a capacity typically associated with solid-state drives (SSDs), Samsung says. This impressive storage allows users to save more than 400,000 4K UHD images or over 45 console games, making these cards ideal for smartphones, action cameras, drones, and handheld gaming consoles. In addition to the 1TB model, Samsung offers these cards in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB options, with the EVO Plus also available in a 64GB variant.

“Creators and tech enthusiasts are increasingly using portable devices such as smartphones and handheld gaming devices to store data that demand high-performance and high-capacity,” Hangu Sohn, Vice President of Memory Brand Product Biz Team at Samsung Electronics says. “The new high-capacity microSD cards, PRO Plus and EVO Plus, are response to the demand for storing large amounts of high-quality data in a reliable and secure way,”

Hangu underscores that, the PRO Plus microSD card is tailored for users who handle large volumes of high-quality content, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 180 megabytes-per-second (MB/s) and write speeds of up to 130MB/s. This performance is bolstered by UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) ratings, making it suitable for recording 4K UHD video and supporting A2 App Performance for faster app loading and multitasking. The EVO Plus card is designed for everyday use, offering transfer speeds of up to 160MB/s. It also features U3 and V30 classes for high-quality video performance, with the 64GB model offering slightly lower specifications but still providing reliable and efficient data storage.

Both the PRO Plus and EVO Plus microSD cards feature controllers built on 28-nanometer (nm) process technology, improving power efficiency compared to previous models that used 55nm technology. This advancement allows users to maximise battery life in their devices when using Samsung’s 1TB cards. Additionally, these cards are equipped with Error Correction Code (ECC) and Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) code, enhancing their durability by supporting higher volumes of write-and-erase cycles. This ensures safer and more reliable data storage over extended periods.

Durability and Compatibility Across Devices
Samsung says that PRO Plus and EVO Plus cards are designed to withstand harsh conditions, making them ideal for use in challenging environments. They are water-resistant, temperature-resistant, X-ray-proof, and magnet-proof, and have been tested to withstand drops and resist wear-out. These durability features provide users with confidence when using the cards in extreme situations. The microSD cards are compatible with a wide range of devices, including Android smartphones, tablets, handheld gaming consoles, action cameras, and drones, offering versatile storage solutions for both everyday and professional use.

Availability and Pricing
The 1TB models of the PRO Plus and EVO Plus microSD cards will be available globally starting in July 2024. The PRO Plus models are priced from ₦40,958 for the 128GB version to ₦252,389 for the 1TB version. The EVO Plus models range from ₦21,290, for the 64GB version to ₦216,331 for the 1TB version. Both cards come with a 10-year limited warranty, underscoring what Samsung says is its commitment to quality and reliability.
