Facebook is unarguably the most used social media in Nigeria, with over 11 million active users in 2014, comprising mostly of the younger generation.
This ubiquitous social platform, which enable millions of its users across the globe to stay connected enables to carry out a number of other activity including the popular ‘status update’.
Despite the numerous benefits the platform provides, Facebook has been used by Nigerians, especially the youth, to make unprintable expressions about various issues. The one that readily comes to mind is the use of the platform to make frivolous statements about political issues during the just-concluded general elections.
However, Facebook can be used for more profitable endeavours than just frivolities. It offers invaluable benefits, monetary and otherwise, for wise and informed users. Some users have used the platform to inspire other users to be better citizens and change agents in their communities. Some individuals use Facebook to organise online seminars where participants are required to pay participation fees. This serves as a means of generating income for the organisers.
It is a fact that marketing is an important revenue driver for businesses. Facebook is one of the very potent marketing platforms available for businesses. With over 11 million users, advertised products and services can reach a large audience across the country. The social media company offers advertising and other publicity services for businesses, albeit at a relatively cheaper rates.

Businesses use the platform as a social engagement platform with their customers and other users. Some companies introduce and carry out promotional offers via Facebook. Others use it to address customers’ complaint, sell their products and services, and offer useful hints about what they do, among others.
Facebook has been used to drive traffic to websites, especially those of online publishing firms. News are shared on the platform and readers are directed to the company’s website to read the full story.
The benefits are not meant for companies only, individuals have used the platform to win contests that require voting by sharing the contest on their Facebook page and inviting friends to vote for them.
These are just a few of the benefits Facebook offers to businesses and individuals that lets users take advantage of them for profit beyond using the platform for unnecessary frivolities.
