The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is to mandate telecoms companies to provide subscribers with access to content that preserves and positively influences Nigerian culture.
The move is part of the telecoms regulator to support the preservation and promotion of Nigerian culture, following a partnership with the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) to preserve Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage in the digital age.
During a meeting held in Abuja, Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, and Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the Executive Secretary/CEO of NICO, discussed strategies to integrate cultural content into digital platforms, according to a statement.
Maida stressed the importance of cooperation among stakeholders to uphold Nigeria’s cultural values. He highlighted the risk of foreign content shaping Nigerian culture and emphasised the need for domestic content production to counteract this influence.
In response to NICO’s proposal to incorporate cultural content into telecoms services, Maida assured support from the NCC while underscoring the role of telecoms in disseminating cultural information and expressed the Commission’s commitment to facilitating this initiative.
Ajiboye underscored the significance of digital integration for preserving Nigerian culture. He revealed NICO’s plan to launch “DuduPlugs,” a Global Cultural Digital Platform, to showcase Nigeria’s cultural heritage and promote cultural pride.
“Our Global Cultural Digital Platform is an attempt to bridge the gap between culture and info-tech. This has the capacity to showcase our e-commerce, language, and other elements that can reach the world robustly and exude the pride of our culture,” Ajiboye said.
The partnership between NCC and NICO seeks to embed cultural content into Nigeria’s digital framework, thereby strengthening cultural identity for future generations.
