The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has called on Nigerians to acquire data protection skills to capitalise on the growing opportunities within the data protection business ecosystem.
This appeal was made by Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, during his keynote address at the 2nd Nigeria Data Expo and Conference 2024.
Dr. Olatunji commended the organisers for their initiative and emphasises the conference’s significance for both the NDPC and the nation. He highlighted that Nigeria’s strides in data protection align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 8-point agenda, which includes job creation, security, and economic growth.
According to Olatunji, “the certification of data protection in Nigeria has been domesticated to provide opportunities for Data Protection Officers and urged everyone to acquire data protection skills to tap into the opportunities within the Data Protection ecosystem”.
Highlighting the rights of data subjects, the National Commissioner emphasises the need for public awareness so that individuals are informed about their data rights and the obligations of data controllers.
He also points out the critical role of skill acquisition and capacity building in data protection, noting that these efforts can create significant employment opportunities both within Nigeria and on a global scale.
