President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following allegations made against the cabinet member.
Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the President, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country. He said he had become a target of blackmail by political opponents, which influenced his decision to step down.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, and seen by Technology Times, President Tinubu acknowledged Nnaji’s contributions to the administration and wished him success in his future endeavours.
Nnaji’s exit marks the latest in a series of cabinet changes since the Tinubu administration assumed office in May 2023, as the President continues to recalibrate his team to drive reforms across key sectors of the economy.
As Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Nnaji who was at the centre of certificate forgery allegations exposed by Premium Times, oversaw initiatives aimed at deepening Nigeria’s technological competitiveness and fostering research-driven development. His tenure coincided with efforts to reposition the ministry as a catalyst for digital transformation and innovation-led growth across public and private sectors.
The Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology plays a central role in advancing Nigeria’s National Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy, which seeks to leverage technology for industrialisation, economic diversification, and job creation.
President Tinubu is expected to announce a replacement to sustain the administration’s ongoing digital and innovation reform agenda.
