President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrating Dr Mike Adeniyi Adenuga Jr., GCON, on his 72nd birthday, praising the telecoms mogul’s transformative impact on Nigeria’s digital and economic landscape, particularly through his groundbreaking introduction of per-second billing in mobile communication.
President Tinubu pays glowing tribute to Adenuga’s “visionary leadership” and the role of Globacom, the telecoms company he founded in 2003, in expanding affordable digital access to millions of Nigerians.
“Nigerians will always appreciate Globacom’s ingenuity in disrupting the billing template in the telecommunications sector,” Tinubu says. “By pioneering per-second billing, Glo expanded telephony and digital access to millions of Nigerians.”

President Tinubu: Adenuga’s Globacom disrupted per-second billing in Nigerian telecoms market
Industry watchers say that Globacom’s move to break the then-dominant per-minute billing model created by foreign incumbents marked a turning point in Nigeria’s telecoms journey. Glo’s innovation, driven by Adenuga’s business acumen, lowered the cost barrier to mobile services, accelerating digital inclusion and economic participation.
Prior to the Glo-led disruption, millions of Nigerians were locked out of mobile communication due to high call tariffs. With per-second billing, Adenuga not only challenged the status quo but empowered a digitally-connected citizenry, shaping Nigeria’s emergence as Africa’s leading telecoms market.
President Tinubu also spotlights Adenuga’s impressive footprint beyond telecoms, notably in the oil and gas sector. Through Conoil, one of Nigeria’s first indigenous oil exploration companies, Adenuga is championing the rise of homegrown enterprise in a sector long dominated by foreign multinationals.
“Conoil has proven that an indigenous firm can compete with international oil companies, fostering energy independence and security for our country,” Tinubu says.
In a further nod to the entrepreneur’s influence, Tinubu is applauding the far-reaching philanthropy of the Mike Adenuga Foundation, which supports education, healthcare, and cultural advancement across Nigeria.
“Dr. Adenuga, Nigeria is grateful for your immense contributions to our country’s progress and prosperity,” Tinubu says. “Your life, from humble beginnings, is a testament to the power of vision and the outcome of resilience.”
Adenuga, often referred to as “The Bull” in business circles for his quiet but forceful approach, is also being recognised for his investments across Africa and Europe.
His accolades include France’s Commander of the Legion of Honour and Ghana’s Companion of the Star of Ghana.
President Tinubu concludes his message by praying for continued blessings on the businessman, wishing him good health and renewed vision to inspire future generations.
“On behalf of the people of Nigeria, I pray that God Almighty will continue to bless you with good health, wisdom, and renewed vision,” the President says. “Happy birthday, Dr. Mike.”
