Truecaller, the popular caller identification app, has unveiled a feature called AI Call Scanner, designed to detect AI-generated voice clones in real-time.

Rise of AI voice scams
According to Truecaller, AI voice scams, also known as “robot scams,” emerged around 2019, coinciding with the rise of deepfake technology. These scams involve the use of artificial intelligence to mimic human voices with remarkable accuracy. Scammers typically gather voice samples from social media videos to train their AI models, creating voice clones that can deceive even close family members. The cloned voice is then used to make fraudulent calls, often aimed at extorting money.
What is Truecaller AI Call Scanner?
To counter these threats, Truecaller has developed AI Call Scanner, a pioneering technology that identifies AI voices during a call. Available on the latest Truecaller version 14.6 for Android, this feature is part of the Truecaller Premium plan and is currently offered in the U.S., with plans for a wider release in other countries, including Nigeria.
How Truecaller AI Call Scanner Works
Set Up: Users need to set Truecaller as their default calling app to access the AI Call Scanner feature.
Initiate AI Detection: If a call seems suspicious, users can tap the “Start AI Detection” button.
Real-Time Analysis: The call is briefly put on hold while the AI analyses the voice, ensuring the user does not miss any part of the conversation.
Instant Feedback: During the analysis, an “Analyzing…” message is displayed. Shortly after, the app provides real-time feedback with a pop-up message indicating either “Human Detected” or “AI Voice Detected.”
