Today’s planned launch of the Visafone Blackberry service is another key milestone for a smartphone that is a favourite of phone users in a market with over 103 million active connections

Lagos. October 24, 2012: Barring any last minute change, Visafone Communications Limited will today launch its Blackberry service in a major pioneering move that enable subscribers on its CDMA network to use the popular smartphone.

Today’s planned launch of the Visafone Blackberry service is another key milestone for a smartphone that is a favourite of phone users in a market with over 103 million active connections

It also confirms Technology Times exclusive report of January 26, 2011 citing silent plans by Visafone, the biggest CDMA operator in Nigeria, to introduce the first Blackberry phones running on a CDMA network in the Nigerian market.

Visafone foray into the Blackberry service comes just as the CDMA market leader recently introduced a mobile money service as the telecoms company says it is betting on innovation to foster its future growth amid stiffer competition faced by other CDMA networks from bigger GSM rivals.

Zenith Bank, one of Nigeria’s biggest banks and Visafone Communications Limited have partnered to introduce a new mobile money payment system to foster the vision of the cashless economy. The product called the EaZy Money has gone live.

In the report, “Visafone eyes 50% growth as regulator rules out bailout for troubled CDMA sector”, Technology Times had exclusively reported that, “talks may have already been opened under plans by Visafone to introduce Blackberry services that will work on its CDMA network, a move it hopes would be another first in its market sector and help lure new customers.”

The report further cites that, “the company has already hired new hands from some GSM companies to drive this new vision in 2011 and hopes that its competitively-priced Blackberry service will open new market opportunities and revenue boost opportunities for the company.”

Technology Times learnt that the introduction of the Blackberry service running on Visafone network is due to be launched at a high-profile event billed to hold in Victoria Island in Lagos.
