WhatsApp has introduced a new in-app translation feature that lets users translate messages instantly, a move designed to make conversations smoother across languages.
With more than 3 billion people in over 180 countries relying on WhatsApp, the update is expected to strengthen connections across diverse communities.
Starting September 23, the feature will be available in select languages, with Android users able to translate in six languages—English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic—while iPhone users will enjoy support for more than 19 languages at launch.

WhatsApp emphasizes that all translations are processed on the user’s device, not on its servers, ensuring that user privacy remains protected.
For Nigerians, where everyday conversations cut across multiple languages including Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, the feature could prove particularly useful in bridging communication barriers among friends, families, and business partners spread across different regions and dialects.
To use the tool, WhatsApp explains:
- Long-press a message and tap Translate.
- Select the language you want to translate from or to.
- Download the language pack once for offline use.
The feature works across individual chats, group discussions, and Channel updates.
On Android, users can also switch on automatic translation for entire chats, meaning all future incoming messages in that conversation will be translated automatically.
WhatsApp emphasizes that all translations are processed on the user’s device, not on its servers, ensuring that user privacy remains protected.
The company says the tool is designed to help people communicate more deeply across language divides, whether keeping in touch with loved ones, engaging communities, or even running businesses in multilingual environments.
