Plasma TV shipments to Brazil grew more than 200 per cent in the first quarter of 2014 as a result of the much anticipated hosting of the 2014 World Cup tournament by the country.
NPD DisplaySearch a US-based market research company noted that Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) TV shipments in Brazil surged 51 per cent in the first quarter of 2014 compared to 2013.
In its latest Quarterly Global TV Shipment and Forecast Report, the company reports that total TV shipments to Brazil reached 3.3 million units in the quarter from 2.1 million units in the same quarter last year.
“Not all regions see increased demand related to major sporting events, but the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament is driving higher levels of demand ahead of the event in Brazil,” said Hisakazu Torii, vice president of smart applications for NPD DisplaySearch.
“The main demand drivers are CRT replacement, broader HD broadcasting availability, and a strong push by manufacturers to maximize the promotional opportunity”, according to Torii.
